44th Annual Horseman's Sunday and World Horse Welfare
Sunday the 18th of September saw Connaught Village will play host to Horseman's Sunday.
The Hyde Park Veterinary Centre has been a keen supporter of Horseman's Sunday ever since Andrew Prentis first arrived in the Connaught village in 1998.
This year the Hyde Park Veterinary Centre helped raise over £140 for World Horse Welfare, a fun day out for all involved and stay tuned for photos appearing in the gallery very soon.
Every year on a Sunday in September, up to 100 horses and their riders gather outside St John's Church for a special church service and blessing for the horses of London. It is a charming and very unusual event that seems to draw ever increasing local crowds.
This year St John’s is celebrating its 44th Annual Horseman’s Sunday on 18 September 2011. The blessing of the horses will take place within a short service on the forecourt of St John’s church in Hyde Park Crescent.
The parade will follow the usual Sunday service, which begins at 10am. And there is even more cause for celebration this year as after five months work the newly refurbished church will be unveiled to the public.
This is one of the most colourful and widely attended events of the year to take place on the Hyde Park Estate. It attracts many horses and their riders that use Rotten Row and Hyde Park, as well as further afield, and is a celebration of horse riding in the heart of London. It also celebrates community life here with stalls, music, refreshments and children’s activities.
For many years now the clinic has had a stand at the event, selling toys and treats for animals, with all the proceeds being donated to charity. Our chosen charity is World Horse Welfare in recognition of their fantastic work helping to rescue and treat many of the millions of working horses, donkeys and mules across the world. Their work has a particular resonance for Andrew as he spent 4 years working on an equine welfare project in north Africa in the 1990's.
